ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - Speaking in an interview for Croatian Television on Sunday evening, on the occasion of Statehood Day and the tenth anniversary of his appointment as Archbishop of Zagreb, the president of the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) and Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, said that patriotism should be valued more.

Bozanic said that the Croatian society was a society in transition, and that privatisation was the result of nationalisation that had been carried out by the communist authorities 50 years ago.

Answering a question about corruption, Bozanic said that corruption was connected with the functioning of the rule of law.

"Dealing with corruption should be to the benefit of all citizens," Bozanic said, adding that all should take part in efforts to combat corruption.

The cardinal went on to say that fundamental values were in danger, and that people were living in an era of dictatorship of relativism. "There are no principles," he said.

Family as an institution is faced with major challenges, the cardinal said. "Parents should have the right to chose how their children will be educated," he said, adding that this included the right to have one's children attend religious classes in schools.

Bozanic recalled that he attended a recent commemoration of the Bleiburg victims on behalf of the HBK, just as Bishop Antun Skvorcevic was attending commemorations for the victims of the Jasenovac concentration camp for the seventh consecutive year.

"The Church condemns every crime because it respects every victim," he said, adding that the Church wanted all periods of Croatia's history to be investigated.

Speaking about media attacks on the Church, Bozanic said the attacks were launched by people who were replacing the word "communism" with the word "antifascism" in order to cover up their own responsibility.

Commenting on an indictment of the Hague war crimes tribunal against Croatian generals, which alleges a criminal enterprise, Bozanic said that Croatians should not allow others interpret their history.

Noting that missing Croatian soldiers were no longer being mentioned, Bozanic stated that Croatia must not allow its recent past to be smeared.

Asked about pedophilia, the cardinal said that pedophilia was committed by evil people and that such people should be immediately reported to the police.

The cardinal said that the Catholic Church was open to dialogue and that it was cooperating well with the Serb Orthodox Church.

We support European unity and Croatia's admission to the European Union, Bozanic said, noting, however, that Croatia should prepare better for EU membership.

As for the issue of real estate, Bozanic said that Croatia should protect its interests and identity.

Asked about Croatian elites, Bozanic said that despite its wish to be of help, the Church could not replace politics.
