SARAJEVO, June 21 (Hina) - In the 1991-95 period, 97,207 citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina died from immediate consequences of armed conflicts, according to a research conducted by the Research and Documentation Centre (IDC) from Sarajevo.

Presenting the results of the research on Thursday, IDC director Mirsad Tokaca said data had been collected for more than three years, by comparing numerous databases and checking all available sources.

He recalled that scientific researches of the real number of casualties of the Bosnian war had not been undertaken before and that figures mentioned ranged from 25,000 to 329,000.

Tokaca recalled that his associates encountered numerous obstructions in their work and that the research would not have been finished without assistance from the Norwegian government.

Fifty-seven thousand casualties (59.1%) were soldiers, while nearly 40,000 were civilians.

The highest number of casualties was registered in April-July 1992 - 45,110 soldiers and civilians, or 46.61%. Tokaca recalled that was the time when only the former Yugoslav Army (JNA) and the Serbs had well-armed and organised units.

The highest number of Croat casualties was registered in 1993, when 3,531 were killed.

During the war, 30,633 members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina were killed or went missing, alongside over 20,000 members of the JNA and the Bosnian Serb army, and 5,719 soldiers whom the research lists as members of the Croatian Army or the Bosnian Croat Defence Council (HVO).

Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) had the highest number of casualties (64,036, or 65.88%), followed by Serbs (24,905, or 25.62%) and Croats (7,788, or 8.01%).

The Croat casualties included 5,625 soldiers and 2,163 civilians.

Of the civilian casualties, Bosniaks accounted for more than 83%, Serbs for 10% and Croats for 5.45%.

Bosniaks also accounted for the highest number of casualties among troops (53.8%), followed by Serbs (36%) and Croats (9.78%).

The Drina river basin is the region with the highest number of casualties, nearly 30,000 people, followed by areas along the Una river and the Sarajevo area, with 14,000 casualties each, and about 12,000 casualties in the Sava river basin.

Tokaca said the research would continue.
