ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Thursday separately received the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative for Russia's Central Federal District, Georgiy Sergeyevich Poltavchenko, and Pakistan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Makhdum Khusro Bakhtyar, Mesic's office said in a statement.

Mesic and Poltavchenko expressed satisfaction with bilateral relations, saying there were objective possibilities to intensify them, notably in the economy, where Croatia and Russia were not competitors.

Poltavchenko praised Croatia for promoting and strengthening stability in the region, saying the best solutions were arrived at through negotiations and were not imposed.

Mesic voiced Croatia's concern about some indications pointing to the possible renewal of the arms race on the European continent. Poltavchenko said Russia was not interested in this development but wanted to work on its economy being able to develop in peace.

Bakhtyar said Croatia-Pakistan relations were good, but that economic potentials were virtually unexploited.

Pakistan is a country with more than 160 million inhabitants in which major infrastructure projects are under way, with great possibilities for Croatian companies in energy and road and railway construction, the statement from Mesic's office said.

Mesic and Bakhtyar also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and Kashmir, where Croatian troops are engaged in peace missions. They also spoke about the fight against global terror and ways of building relations in the wake of conflicts.
