The Global Peace Index ranked the countries according to 24 criteria, from violence and organised crime to military expenditure.
Croatia was ranked 67th, just below Jordan, Namibia, Senegal and Nicaragua, and just above Malawi, Bolivia and Peru.
Of the former Yugoslav republics, Slovenia was ranked 15th, Bosnia and Herzegovina 75th, Macedonia 82nd and Serbia 84th. They are the only European countries, alongside Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and Moldova, that Croatia was ranked above.
