The establishment of the modern Croatian Parliament paved the way for a new era for the Croatian people and citizens of the Republic of Croatia.
The first democratic parliament adopted a number of crucial decisions shaping the future of the country, including the promulgation of the Christmas Constitution, and the constitutional decisions on sovereignty and independence of Croatia and the severance of state and legal ties with the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Until 2001, May 30 was observed as a national bank holiday. Under the changed law on national holidays and nonworking days, since then May 30 has been marked as a memorial day.
