New Serbian foreign minister on visit to Bosnia

SARAJEVO, May 28 (Hina) - The new Serbian foreign minister Vuk Jeremic, whose first official visit was to Bosnia-Herzegovina, on Monday said that the new Serbian government was committed to strengthening good-neighbourly relations in the region and that Belgrade would do all it could to close "the ugly page of the recent past".

Jeremic, who took office on 16 May, on Monday visited Sarajevo where he held talks with his Bosnian counterpart Sven Alkalaj.

After the talks Jeremic told the press that the fact that Bosnia was the destination of his first official visit abroad should be interpreted as a message of the Serbian leadership about importance it attached to good neighbourly relations.

The Serbian minister said that over the recent months the relations between Sarajevo and Belgrade had passed "a delicate period" and added that his government would spare no effort to improve bilateral relations.

He explained that this meant that Serbia was willing to meet obligations stemming from a recent verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which assessed that Serbia had failed to prevent genocide in Srebrenica and that Serbia was liable for the fact that those responsible for the Srebrenica atrocities, Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, were still at large.

"The Serbian Government will meet those obligations through the completion of its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia," said Jeremic who later departed for Banja Luka where he would hold talks with the Bosnian Serb entity's Prime Minister Milorad Dodik and open the new building of Serbia's consulate.
