Pack says Tadic expected to meet commitments to Hague tribunal

NOVI SAD, May 20 (Hina) - The member of the European Parliament in charge of Southeast Europe, Doris Pack, said in Novi Sad on Sunday that Serbian President Boris Tadic was expected to keep his promise and contribute to the meeting of Serbia's commitments to the Hague war crimes tribunal.

The National Security Council is under Tadic's umbrella and he has always assured us that he will cooperate with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Pack told the press in the Assembly of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, where she attended the closing session of the three-day European Youth Parliament.

Pack added she could not understand that nobody was interested in arresting Bosnian Serb wartime military leader Ratko Mladic and bringing him to justice.

She went on to say that inter-ethnic relations in Vojvodina had improved in the last two to three years, but added that more could have been done about Vojvodina as part of Serbia's decentralisation.

Pack said it was very important that young people in Serbia felt that Europe was their future and that politicians would advocate this goal.

Vojvodina parliament deputy speaker Sandor Egeresi agreed, saying that a surge of neo-nationalism in Serbia could be prevented only by working with young people on the promotion of the European spirit.

The European Youth Parliament gathered 160 young people from Germany, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Serbia who took part in a simulation of the process of drawing closer and joining the European Union. The event was organised by the German Institute for International Relations in cooperation with the German Embassy in Serbia, Vojvodina's parliament and government, and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and European Commission missions in Serbia.
