PM says government will help generals indicted by Hague tribunal

DUBROVNIK, May 27 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Sunday the government would do everything to help the defence of Croatian Army generals indicted by the Hague war crimes tribunal and that, if General Ante Gotovina's defence counsel requested that he be released pending trial, it would seriously consider the request.

He was speaking to the press in the southern Adriatic resort of Dubrovnik, where he had attended Croatian Armed Forces Day.

"When we're talking about the defence of our generals, the Croatian government will do everything to help their defence teams and if such a request is made, we will give it serious consideration," Sanader said when asked to comment on Gotovina's lawyers' announcement that they would request his provisional release.

The press also asked for a comment on allegations that the Hague tribunal's Office of the Prosecutor had added a confidential section to the new draft indictment for crimes committed during 1995's Operation Storm, mentioning new names involved in a joint criminal enterprise.

Sanader said that under a resolution of the UN Security Council, which founded the Hague tribunal, after 31 December 2004 there would be no new investigations and that no one else would be accused.
