OSIJEK, May 4 (Hina) - During a joint visit to the eastern Croatian city of Osijek with Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday that the two countries had no outstanding issues, adding that the Hungarian county of Baranja and the Croatian region of Slavonia had great cooperation potential.

After he and Solyom visited the Education and Culture Centre of the Hungarian community in Croatia, Mesic told reporters that the two countries' economic cooperation would intensify once Croatia joined the European Union, adding that cooperation in culture, education and tourism would follow.

I hope that cooperation would be advanced even before Croatia's admission into the EU, Mesic said, adding that this could be achieved by opening minority-language schools.

During the visit to Osijek, Mesic also commented on recent media headlines according to which the new Croatian Army Commander, General Mladen Kruljac, failed the so-called security check for the domestic military service.

A background check was run, including the check concerning his role during and after the war. His record is clean and there's no reason for concern, Mesic said.
