So far they have been coalition partners.
Jovanovic, who was a close aide of the assassinated Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and the deputy prime minister in his cabinet, was elected the president of the united LDP and GSS parties at the convention of their merger in Belgrade on Saturday evening.
On this occasion Jovanovic said that this party would serve as "guidance and an ice-breaker" in the Serbian society.
Commenting on the issue of Kosovo, he said that "in the (UN) Security Council Serbia can win a victory over nobody but only over itself". He referred to the ongoing debates on a final status of this UN-administered province and on Serbia's insistence that Kosovo remain within its state border.
Jovanovic said that all remaining indictees wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia who are still at large "must be in prison as the entire Serbia has become a prison owing to the inability and quasi-patriotism of Prime Minister Vojioslav Kostunica".
The new LDP Deputy President is Natasa Micic
The LDP-led coalition has 15 seats in the Serbian parliament.
