The Serbian Radical Party, which is in power in Novi Sad, proposed naming a street after Veljko Milanovic, the commander of the paramilitary unit "Vukovi s Vucjaka" (Wolves from Vucjak), for his "contribution to the liberation of western Slavonia, Modrica and Derventa".
The late commander of the Novi Sad Corps, JNA general Mladen Bratic, who commanded a tank unit that attacked the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar, was also honoured with a street named after him.
HNV president Branko Horvat said the decision was motivated by nationalist and ideological reasons, and that groups and organisations behind it did not have good intentions.
The decision to name two streets after persons that are mentioned in the records of the Hague war crimes tribunal was adopted by the Novi Sad City Assembly on Tuesday despite strong protests from the Opposition, which is made up of Democratic parties.
