We will not accept an imposed solution that is to the detriment of the other side, and Serbia's admission to the EU can't be compensation for Kosovo, the leader of Romania's Socialist Democratic Party, Mircea Geoana, said after talks with Serbian President Boris Tadic.
The SI delegation, which also met PM Vojislav Kostunica, also included the Bulgarian PM and leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Sergei Stanishev, SI Secretary-General Luis Ayala, and the leader of the Greek PASOK party, Georgios Papandreou. The latter told reporters that Kosovo was a European issue and that the EU should play the main role in defining its future status.
Serbian President Tadic said that "Serbia defends its sovereignty and integrity as a matter of principle, which means that Kosovo should be kept part of Serbia," and that the province's future status should be the result of a consensus.
The SI will use its influence and reputation to support Serbia's speedy integration with NATO and the EU, said Geoana, who also co-chairs the SI's Committee on Southeast Europe.
The SI delegation will today visit Pristina and meet Kosovo officials, as well as representatives of the local Serb community.
