Titov says Russia advocates compromise solution on Kosovo

BELGRADE, March 1 (Hina) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov informed the authorities in Belgrade on Thursday that Moscow pushed for a compromise on the definition of Kosovo's final status.
BELGRADE, March 1 (Hina) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov informed the authorities in Belgrade on Thursday that Moscow pushed for a compromise on the definition of Kosovo's final status.

Titov met Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, and Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic.

Neither of the four officials spoke to the press after meeting, but a statement said that Moscow supported Serbia's position on the settlement of the Kosovo status issue.

Tadic reiterated in a statement that Serbia would not accept Kosovo's independence and that negotiations on the status should result in a compromise solution acceptable to both sides. Titov said the solution to Kosovo's status must not set a precedent, according to the statement.

The Serbian government said in a statement that Titov confirmed that Russia would not support before the Security Council the plan for Kosovo by UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari unless Pristina and Belgrade were agreed about the plan.

The Serbian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Titov informed Draskovic that when it came to Kosovo, Russia insisted on respecting the principle of territorial integrity of states, but also on meeting all legitimate rights of Kosovo Albanians.
