The gathering, organised by the Italian Ministry of Justice and the Croatian Judicial Academy, brought together judges, public prosecutors, inspectors, legal experts and civil servants from Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia.
Organisers said that the purpose of the round table was to prepare Croatia and other countries in the region for joining the single European market and to assist them in combating corruption and strengthening legal security.
Judicial Academy Director Stefica Staznik said that judicial reform and the combating of corruption were the most demanding tasks in the process of accession to the European Union and that assistance from European experts in that regard was of paramount importance.
The round table was being held as part of the CARDS regional project 2003 "Establishing an Independent, Reliable and Functioning Judiciary and Enhancing Judicial Cooperation in the Western Balkans".
