ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament Committee on Information and the Media on Friday supported the appointment of four members of the Hina Governing Council proposed by the government.

The government proposed that along with the previously nominated representative of the agency's staff, Vladimir Lulic, the following four persons should be appointed to the Hina Governing Council: Srecko Lipovcan as a media expert, Aleksandar Adler as a financial expert, Gordana Carevic as a legal expert and Damir Pavuna as an IT expert.

Opposition deputies accused the government of attempting to appoint its "minions" to the Governing Council in order to put Hina as a public news service under its control.

The opposition members of the Committee were unhappy with a brief explanation from Assistant Culture Minister Ante Mandaric that in selecting the candidates the government respected the criteria provided for in the Hina Act, so they requested an additional explanation as to why the four candidates had been selected from among the 22 applications.

All four candidates received the support of the six Committee members from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), but were rejected by the five opposition members from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the People's Party (HNS) and the Peasant Party (HSS).
