Negative public view of NATO accession can be changed through public polemic - ambassador

ZAGREB, Feb 11 (Hina) - The ambassador to the Croatian Mission to NATO, Davor Bozinovic, said on Sunday Croatia should join the alliance and that the public's negative attitude to that could be changed only in a well-argumented public polemic.
ZAGREB, Feb 11 (Hina) - The ambassador to the Croatian Mission to NATO, Davor Bozinovic, said on Sunday Croatia should join the alliance and that the public's negative attitude to that could be changed only in a well-argumented public polemic.

Accession to NATO will resolve the issue of Croatia's national security as no one will dare attack Croatia, Bozinovic told a panel on Croatia's NATO entry organised by the People's Party (HNS).

Commenting on speculation that by joining the alliance Croatia would be obliged to send troops to peace missions, Bozinovic said Croatia would always send troops to peace missions based on its own decision and that this could not be called an obligation.

The HNS has a totally positive attitude to Croatia's accession to NATO, said Mladen Ruzman, the party's PR, adding that NATO was one of the communication channels between Europe and the United States in which Croatia wanted a place.

Accession to NATO would be important also because it would elevate the Croatian army to NATO standards, said Ruzman.

He said surveys showing that Croatian citizens were against joining NATO were due to the bad view of the US intervention in some areas such as Iraq.
