ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Friday sent to parliament amendments to the drug abuse prevention legislation, stipulating a possibility for the destruction of confiscated illegal narcotics before a final verdict on the matter.
ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Friday sent to parliament amendments to the drug abuse prevention legislation, stipulating a possibility for the destruction of confiscated illegal narcotics before a final verdict on the matter.

Discussing this matter on International Drugs Day, observed on 26 June, government officials were informed that in Croatia, 113 young people died of overdose in 2008 as against 150 death cases among drug addicts in 2007.

Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor also said that last year Croatia incinerated over four tonnes of drugs.

Kosor as well as Health and Social Welfare Minister Darko Milinovic said that this cabinet had no intention of decriminalising so-called soft drugs.

The cabinet of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Friday also okayed a grant of HRK 2.5 million to the Institute of Telemedicine for implementing a teleradiology project for connecting hospitals on islands and in the southern town of Knin with clinical hospitals in the country.

The government adopted an action plan for suppressing HIV and AIDS in 2009.

The government also adopted documents prepared within activities to adjust Croatia's legislation in various fields to European Union standards. Some of those documents are action plans for social inclusion in 2009 and 2010, a plan for the distribution of greenhouse emission quotas and amendments to the enactment of laws on customs duties.
