ZAGREB, June 15 (Hina) - A workshop on providing jobs for members of the Roma ethnic minority was opened by Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor in Zagreb on Monday.

The workshop heard that headway had been achieved in education and employment of the Roma since 2007.

In 2007 there were 467 Roma employed in Croatia to rise to 618 in 2008. In addition, over 200 members of that ethnic minority were engaged in public works in 2008.

Kosor said that the number of Roma pupils enrolled in primary schools increased four times.

There are currently 4,000 Roma children covered by primary education in Croatia.

All those enrolled in secondary schools as well as all in tertiary education, and currently there are 20 Roma students in colleges, receive scholarships, she said.

According to Kosor, since 2005 when Croatia started the implementing the national plan for the Roma and the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015 action plan, funds for those programmes had increased from HRK 2.7 million to HRK 39 million in 2009.
