Croatia, Serb Orthodox Church to intensify cooperation in property restitution

ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - Croatia's Culture Minister and the head of the commission for relations with religious communities, Bozo Biskupic, has said that relations between the Croatian government and the Serb Orthodox Church in Croatia are very good.
ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - Croatia's Culture Minister and the head of the commission for relations with religious communities, Bozo Biskupic, has said that relations between the Croatian government and the Serb Orthodox Church in Croatia are very good.

Addressing the press after his meeting with a delegation of the Serb Orthodox Church in Zagreb on Wednesday, Biskupic said that there were some problems concerning the restitution of nationalised property to the Serb Orthodox Church, the ethnic Serb business association Privrednik and a Serb cultural society called Prosvjeta.

The minister pledged the commission would intensify its work as of next week in a bid to solve what he said were burning issues, primarily the property restitution.

Commenting on the restoration of Church monuments and artefacts, Biskupic said that the culture ministry had earmarked HRK 9.8 million for this purpose in 2009. He went on to say that the renovation of Orthodox churches and facilities in Karlovac, Vinkovci and Vukovar had been completed.

Jovan Pavlovic, metropolitan of Zagreb, Ljubljana and Italy, who led the church delegation, expressed satisfaction with the agreement they reached at today's meeting.

He thanked Biskupic and his ministry for the care for the heritage of the Serb Orthodox Church.

The dignitary expressed hope that problems in property restitution would be solved with good will on the part of both sides.
