Merino fleece prices were mixed, with 19 micron up to one percent cheaper, 20/21/25 microns were slightly cheaper, while 22 micron was 0.5 percent dearer and 23/24 micron slightly dearer. Merino skirtings tended lower with 19 microns unchanged and 20/21 microns up to one percent cheaper. Crossbreds also tended lower with 26 micron unchanged and 27/28/29 micron 0.5 percent cheaper and 30/31 microns one percent cheaper. WI said most buying came from Japan and China with good support from Taiwan. Of the 15,925 bales on offer, 19.3 percent was passed in. But there was some evidence that short-term demand for textiles including carpets had helped to keep up the call for deliveries. The worry was that a stronger sterling and the potential for higher interest rates could lead to a reversal and see import competition gaining ground, some participants said. Topmakers quotations were unchanged to three pence down. New commitments are being treated more cautiously as the general sentiment was one of sitting back and postponing decisions, possibly due to the approach of the Christmas break. 031105 MET dec 96
