But scale-up selling by the trade capped the rally, they added. Prices took a downturn at the open as speculative selling pushed prices lower, traders said. But after downward momentum faded, they said speculators reversed course. Traders said weekly export figures may have contributed to the market's weakness this morning. The USDA reported Friday U.S. export 1996/97 net sales to the week ended Nov. 21 were 117,400 running bales, up 24 percent from the previous week, but 28 percent less than the four-week average. March settled 0.42 cent higher at 76.49 cents per pound, traded 76.52 to 75.42 cents. Spot December ended up 0.45 at 75.25 cents, while the back months finished 0.03 to 0.45 firmer. Open interest in the December contract stood at 850 lots as of Friday. December 6 is the final trading day for the contract. Technically, March resistance was pegged at 76.50 cents, while support was seen near the day's low of 75.42 cents. Volume was estimated at 10,500 lots. 031105 MET dec 96
