Copper, aluminium and zinc, the worst hit in the selloff, had all logged some distance from Thursday's lows by the end of the morning rings, aided by drawdowns in London Metal Exchange (LME) inventories. But they reversed course, with copper at the helm, during the kerb. Traders said the market was apprehensive ahead of the opening of New York markets and watching for a possible repeat of the fund liquidation seen in aluminium on Thursday during the thinly traded lunch hour. "It's very nervous today after Thursday's sell-off," a trader said. Three months copper, which had tumbled some $60 to a low of $2,320 on Thursday by the late close, finished the morning kerb at $2,336 per tonne, down $4 from the previous kerb close. It turned back at a high of $2,349, after failing to pierce $2,350 resistance. Cash to threes backwardation, which flared by about $10 from morning levels to $50/$51 on a bout of borrowing in the rings, also narrowed. It was last indicated at $42/$47. An inventory decilne may be underpinning the market slightly, but the stock drawdown of 2,775 tonnes was less than expected. Aluminium also pared gains on the kerb, although it was holding on better than copper. Prices finished the kerb at $1,618, which was off the high of the day of $1,622 but still $9 stronger than Thursday's weak close. Aluminium faced tough resistance at $1,625 and up after fund liquidation pushed it below the $1,630 support level on Thursday. Support was at $1,600. Still, a stock drop of 7,875 tonnes was supportive. Zinc similarly was off highs but still in the plus column following the gloom of Thursday's selloff. Aided by a 4,625 tonne stock drop, zinc had climbed to a high of $1,279 per tonne, but ended the kerb at $1,267, which was a gain of $8 from the previous kerb close. "Zinc is one to watch today with the funds. When volumes are so thin, prices can drift higher and then get smacked down when any amount of selling comes in," a trader said. Nickel was $10 easier at $7,620. But it had recovered from a test of the downside in the pre-market, when in it hit a low of $7,520. An inventory rise of 306 tonnes was shrugged off. Tin, which alone was virtually unaffected by the sell-off, remained quiet and steady at $5,830/40, versus $5,850. Stocks were up 60 tonnes.
