LME slow at midsession, prices mixed but softening
LONDON, April 1 (Reuter) - Trading in LME base metals
remained slow at Tuesday's midsession, with activity slow to
pick up after the Easter holiday break, and after a bright start
most prices slipped back.
Traders said an overhead failure in copper, against the
background of freer lending of the spreads, washed through other
metals, although there was little substance to the selling that
emerged in the rings.
Also, the New York market is opening one hour later this
week because of Europe's switch to summer time.
"It has been awful all day - we might as well have extended
the holiday," one trader said.
Copper made an early abortive attempt to erode resistance
above $2,380, but with the 6,225-tonne stock fall less than
expected, prics soon tailed lower. Less metal than has been
talked about was shipped from Singapore to China, traders noted
Cash pricing in the rings also weighed on the market, and by
the end of the kerb three months was back at $2,354, down $18 a
tonne from Thursday's kerb. The cash/threes spread eased to
$47/50 backwardation from some $60 last week, with cash/May
moving into a small contango.
Elsewhere, zinc lost upside enthusiasm after an initial
run-up above $1,300 which was due to stocks falling 13,025
tonnes - mostly in Europe. However, an undercurrent of trade
support kept the market fairly well underpinned, and last trade
was at $1,297, up $2.
Aluminium wobbled with copper, dipping back under $1,640
under light speculative selling, and a re-test of $1,630 is now
likely. Final morning business was at $1,633, down $9 from the
previous kerb.
Nickel was unable to hold $7,800, not aided by a 240-tonne
stock rise, and prices lost ground on some merchant selling,
ending the session at $7,760, a loss of $45.
Tin and lead held stable in lacklustre conditions, and were
last at $5,885 and $688, unchanged and up $2 respectively. Alloy
was neglected and indicated at $1,537/40, down from pre-weekend
levels.
