Three month prices bounced from a low of $7,675 despite a statement by Norilsk Nickel that its unions had agreed to drop all plans to disrupt output through June 30. Prices surged in the last minutes of the official ring in large volumes thought to be fund-based, regaining the $7,800 level. "Maybe they had been expecting the news so they turned around on the fact," one floor trader said. During the kerb, prices drifted down to finish the morning at $7,760, down $60 from Monday's afternoon kerb. The lows had been touched after LME inventories increased by 846 tonnnes as fund selling re-emerged on the pre-market. The market had seen a good run up to $8,325 earlier in the month but chartists noted that the 10-day moving average looked like it was about to make a bearish cross below the 30-day average. "I'd be a buyer around $7,700, but if it closes below $7,650, it would look bad," another floor trader said before prices bounced. A fall in aluminium stocks of 8,775 tonnnes was not enough to restrain broad-based selling, which pressured prices below the $1,650 level. The market may even test its recent low of $1,637 before consolidating and trying to re-challenge the $1,701 high achieved on March 4, a floor trader said. Copper held to a narrow trading band after stocks declined by 4,300 tonnes, finishing the morning only $5 weaker at $2,362. Prices were well within the recent range of $2,305-$2,390 and good support was pegged around $2,350, where the 10-day and 30-day moving averages were converging. The premium of cash over three months was barely easier at $53/$58 and the main lump of tightness, the May/June spread came in to be bid at a $42 backwardation from $47 on Monday morning. Zinc, which saw a 1,350 draw in stocks, came off its low of $1,284 and finished the kerb only $4 weaker at $1,290. Speculators had targeted the market earlier in the morning but the major uptrend was still intact and prices were seen consolidating ahead of another stab at breaking above the recent $1,307 peak. Lead saw some Chinese selling and prices edged lower to $674, but volume was thin and by the end of the kerb prices had come back to be indicated at $678/79 versus $679 on Friday afternoon. Tin lost $50 to $5,820 and some analysts are targeting a slump to $5,780 before the market regains its poise. Alloy lost ground along with the primary market ending the morning at $1,535/40 versus $1,545/55. _________________________________________________________________ _ STANJE LME ZALIHA NA DAN - 25.03.1997. - po pojedinim skladištima _________________________________________________________________ _ ++ COPPER WIRE BARS + ANTWERP 50 HAMBURG 25 ++ COPPER CATHODES + ANTWERP 1400 DUNKIRK 50 HAMBURG 20675 ROTTERDAM 12150 PIRAEUS 25 GENOA 150 LEGHORN 650 TRIESTE 19750 BARCELONA 225 BILBAO 11850 GOTHENBURG 14275 HELSINBORG 9175 LONG BEACH 46875 ST LOUIS 300 SINGAPORE 42875 LOSA... 2975 ++ TIN ++ ANTWERP 10 HAMBURG 125 ROTTERDAM 4525 GENOA 390 TRIESTE 15 BILBAO 40 HULL 410 LIVERPOOL 4155 BALTIMORE 425 CHICAGO 20 LONG BEACH 5 NEW HAVEN 50 LOSA... 35 ++ LEAD + ANTWERP 100 HAMBURG 875 ROTTERDAM 1650 GENOA 2500 GOTHENBURG 9925 HELSINBORG 80550 GOOLE 225 HULL 900 LIVERPOOL 50 SUNDERLAND 300 DETROIT 750 LONG BEACH 500 SINGAPORE 9100 ++ ZINC + ANTWERP 47825 DUNKIRK 1200 BREMEN 1575 HAMBURG 1050 ROTTERDAM 164175 PIRAEUS 275 GENOA 13800 TRIESTE 114450 BARCELONA 13075 BILBAO 13250 GOTHENBURG 10625 HELSINBORG 58050 LIVERPOOL 13375 CHICAGO 200 SINGAPORE 6175 ++ NICKEL + ANTWERP 858 ROTTERDAM 36054 GENOA 150 TRIESTE 54 GOTHENBURG 9690 LONG BEACH 96 NEW HAVEN 120 SINGAPORE 600 ++ ALUMINIUM ++ ANTWERP 2050 ROTTERDAM 55475 TRIESTE 575 BILBAO 500 GOTHENBURG 46125 HELSINBORG 145650 AVONMOUTH 27750 HULL 111750 LIVERPOOL 264500 NEWCASTLE 129625 SUNDERLAND 51025 DETROIT 1025 NEW HAVEN 2050 HAKATA 50 MOJI 50 SINGAPORE 17325 ++ ALUMINIUM ALLOY ++ ANTWERP 5980 DUNKIRK 2020 DUISBERG 620 HAMBURG 60 ROTTERDAM 1020 BRESCIA 2520 GENOA 3040 TRIESTE 7300 BARCELONA 80 BILBAO 1800 GOTHENBURG 220 DERBY 480 HULL 760 LIVERPOOL 27740 CHICAGO 4200 DETROIT 1320 LONG BEACH 10320 ST LOUIS 3160 _________________________________________________________________ _ STANJE LME ZALIHA NA DAN 25. ožujka 1997. količine su u tonama _________________________________________________________________ _ COPPER 183475 DOWN 4300 TIN 10205 UP 700 LEAD 107425 DOWN 175 ZINC 459100 DOWN 1350 ALUMINIUM 855525 DOWN 8775 NICKEL 47622 UP 846 AL.ALLOY 72640 DOWN 120 STOCK IN OUT COPPER wire bars 75 0 0 COPPER cathodes 183400 225 4525 TIN 10205 770 70 LEAD 107425 0 175 ZINC 459100 850 2200 NICKEL briquettes 4560 0 0 NICKEL cathodes 43026 1128 282 NICKEL pellets 36 0 0 STOCK IN OUT ALUMINIUM ingots 370175 0 3325 ALUMINIUM T-bars 308750 0 5050 ALUMINIUM sows 176600 0 400 AL.ALLOY D12S/JIS 500 0 0 AL.ALLOY 226/DIN 42640 160 280 AL.ALLOY A380.1 29500 0 0 INSIGHT - Copper LME stocks expected down --------------------------------------------------------------- 3 MONTH CLOSE * SUPPORT * RESIST * RSI14 * MA10 * MA30 COPPER 2360/64 * 2350 * 2409 * 57 * 2346 * 2342 ALUMINIUM 1650/54 * 1637 * 1669 * 52 * 1661 * 1639 ---------------VIEWS FROM THE MARKET - Mar 25------------------ LONDON, March 25 (Reuter) - Copper may see prices testing recent highs against the backdrop of uptrending technical indicators and an expected fall in London Metal Exchange (LME) stocks of between 5,000 and 8,000 tonnes , traders and analysts said. Aluminium is looking to cling to $1,650 support to offset pressure from downtrending charts. COPPER - An expected fall in LME inventories coupled with uptrending chart patterns may see copper shrug off its late bearish stance on Monday and climb towards and retest resistance at $2,390, traders and chartwatchers said. "The poor close (Monday) is suggestive of further selling pressure but with the technical indicators maintaining their upwards trend we would look for further dips to provide buying opportunities," Martin Squires of Rudolf Wolff said. LME brokers Brandeis said upside pressure on $2,390/$2,400 looks like being maintained. Brandeis said rising 10- and 30-day moving averages were providing a platform for attempts to probe higher once again. According to chartist Harry Creates of Amalgamated Metal Trading first support for copper was expected to emerge at $2,355. Creates pegged further support at $2,322 and $2,303. At 0905 GMT three months delivery copper was indicated at $2,366/69 a tonne against Monday's late close of $2,360/64. LME copper stocks were 4,300 tonnes down. ALUMINIUM - Needs to hold $1,650 a tonne to offset falls. In early trading prices hovered close to this key level despite an LME stocks fall of 8,775 tonnes. "The market appears to be supported above $1,650 for now but we do not rule out a test of $1,637 support," Brandeis said. Creates of AMT said aluminium was gripped by a sloping head and shoulders chart pattern which was targeting $1,585. At 0915 GMT aluminium was quoted at $1,651/53, versus $1,650/54.
