The slowly sinking May contract in New York which began the week at a close of 77.95 cents per lb to 76.15 cents was reflected in the Cotlook 'B' Index which showed American origins down 1.25 cents per lb overnight and others losing 0.5-1.00 cents. As futures traders reacted to disappointing U.S. sales data, European business focussed on hand-to-mouth buying of Central Asian styles plus some purchases of West African and Syrian origins in Italy, industry sources said. Spinners reported that activity levels were being sustained but margins are being squeezed, indicating little prospect for a near-term let up in hand-to-mouth trade. 141001 MET mar 97
