Palm oil prices held their early gains which were made after short covering boosted closing prices in Malaysia. However, most buyers were sidelined ahead of fresh Malaysian export data from SGS. "Malaysian exports are the all important factor in the market now and people ware waiting to see what SGS estimates for March 1-20," said a trader. News that China had pulled out of a purchase of 50,000 tonnes of Malaysian palm oil for March/May shipment in favour of South American soybean oil had little impact. "The market reacted to the rumours on Tuesday and it has now been discounted," said one trader. Chinese traders said palm olein was $580 a tonne a fob Malaysian ports with freight costs of $25 a tonne against south American soy oil at $510 to $515 a tonne fob plus $50 a tonne freight. Rumours of problems with a shipment of sunflower oil to Pakistan also appear to have been confirmed. "People I have been talking to in Pakistan have more or less confirmed the sunflower oil talk," said a Singapore based trader. Traders said on Monday that a letter of credit for a shipment of 30,000 tonnes of sunflower oil to Pakistan had not been honoured and the oil was being sold on the local market at a discount to palm oil. Crude palm oil closed $2.50 up to unchanged after May/Jul traded at $555 a tonne cif. Products finished unchanged to $5 higher with no further business reported during the afternoon. Soft oils were also higher, but traders said there was no real reason for the increase. "Most people are keeping out of the way and only buying when they have to owing to the volatile trading in Chicago," said one trader. "I think these levels are only holding because no is really bothering to challenge them," said another. Dutch soy oil closed one guilder up while rape oil was 1.75 guilders higher to unchanged after tender rape oil for next week fetched 101.50 guilders a 100 kilos. "I doubt if the deal amounted 100 tonnes," a trader said. Coconut oil close mixed at $2.50 up to $2.50 down after Mar/Apr traded at $725 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil finished $5 to $7.50 down in a neglected market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 201143 MET mar 97
