Other metals challenged higher levels with zinc carving out a fresh peak above $1,300 a tonne and lead rechallenging $700. Three months copper initially dipped after rumours swirled in Shanghai that traders had been told to suspend imports. But the market -- which has been counting on China to wade in to replenish its strategic stockpile -- seemed to shrug off any bearish implications of the news. "I wouldn't put too much in what they say. They'll be talking their own book, so they may be trying to talk down the price ahead of buying," one senior trader said. Chinese officials dismissed the reports that authorities had issued a directive suspending copper imports and ordering traders not to sell their copper. On the LME, prices recovered, popping up to $2,379, before settling at an indication of $2,372/76, up from Friday's kerb close of $2,356. Copper could also benefit after rebels captured Zaire's third largest city Kisangani over the weekend and said they were heading towards the mining centre of Lubumbashi, broker GNI said in a commentary. "However, at worst, around 30,000 tonnes of copper (annually) could be affected," GNI said. Early business was thin and few fireworks were expected from Third Wednesday pricing in ring trading, traders said. Zinc burst through the $1,300 level, notching up a fresh 4-1/2 year high after a sizeable stocks fall on Friday. The market touched $1,304, the highest since early October 1992, up $14 from Friday's kerb close. Further resistance was pegged at $1,315 and $1,325, chartists said. Lead also pushed higher, largely due to option-related buying from the Far East, one trader said. Prices got a foothold above the $700 level for the first time in about two weeks, with the last indication at $705/7, up from $690 at Friday's kerb. Aluminium followed the pack higher, but failed to make a great deal of progress after Friday's lacklustre stocks decline. The market was last indicated at $1,674/77 compared with $1,668 on Friday. Nickel added $60 to $8,175, breaking out of last week's range and making moves back towards its recent peak of $8,325 achieved on March 4. Tin was unchanged at $6,060 and alloy was up $10 at $1,560.
