LME nickel hits fresh 9-1/2 month highs on Norilsk
LONDON, March 3 (Reuter) - LME nickel charged higher on
Monday morning after Russian workers at Norilsk adopted a plan
to strike if management fails to agree to settle a dispute over
wage arrears within 10 days.
Three months nickel touched a fresh 9-1/2 month peak of
$8,290 per tonne on the pre-market and traders expect to see
further progress in later ring activity.
On Friday, prices ended the afternoon kerb at $8,070.
"It looks like we could go all the way to $8,400, but around
there I think we might see some selling," one said.
On May 14, 1996, nickel touched a peak of $8,430, with the
high for the month at $8,620.
At the close of business on Friday, the 14-day RSI was not
yet in overbought territory at 63.
Analyst William Adams of broker Rudolf Wolff noted that
spreads had been tightening, with the threes/Dec contango
narrowing over the past two weeks from $120/30 to $75/85.
Traders said volumes had not been very big, but many other
metals followed nickel higher, with copper marching towards
$2,400, but halting at a high of $2,392.
After copper's failure to hold $2,400 on Friday and the
kerb close at $2,378, several analysts expected a test of the
downside on Monday morning.
In later ring trading, copper might gather enough steam to
attack the $2,412 recent high, but traders were uncertain
whether it could make much progress above that.
"I think it will struggle at the higher levels," one said.
Aluminium joined the advance, marching to a near 10-month
high of $1,676, up $22 from the Friday kerb close.
The target was $1,680, the high of May 1996, with layers of
resistance then up to $1,700, the peak from January 1996.
Traders said good consumer buying had been seen in both the
primary and alloy aluminium markets recently.
Alloy was indicated at $1,550/60, up $10.
Lead gained a foothold above the $700 level, gaining $5 to
touch $703, and more gains could be seen.
"Considering so many people in the market have been so
bearish, there is likely to be a lot of short covering to do by
both the funds and the trade," Adams said.
Zinc added $4 to $1,222, and tin gained $50 to $5,840.
