New sales of 195,000 480-lb bales fell in line with expectations. But with ending stocks above 4.0 million bales, players remain cautious. "An export or offtake number where ending stocks would fall under 4.0 million bales would be psychologically friendly for the market," Jarral Neeper, an analyst with Calcot Ltd, said. But the Chinese New Year, beginning Friday and lasting two weeks, could stymie business since China has been a major buyer, he said. For the week ended Jan 30, China purchased 92,300 bales of cotton. The USDA will release its monthly supply and demand estimates Wednesday. Last month, ending stocks were pegged at 4.7 million bales and exports 6.3 million bales, for the current crop year. The spot- March contract ended down 0.40 at 74.45 cents, having ranged from 74.80 to 74.40 cents. The back months settled 0.44 to 0.15 lower. Volume estimated at 5,000 lots. Technically, trade selling is expected to limit rallies around 74.25 cents basis March, dealers said. 071031 MET feb 97
