In merino fleece, the 19 micron indicator was 0.5 percent cheaper and the 20/21m 1.0 percent cheaper, while 22/23m was 1.0 percent dearer, it said. The 24m indicator was slightly dearer, and 25m slightly cheaper. Merino skirtings of 19 micron were 1.0 percent cheaper, and 20/21/22m generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 26m was slightly cheaper, 27/28/29m slightly dearer, 30m up to 1.0 percent dearer and 31m unchanged. In cardings, lambs of 19m and finer were 2.0 percent dearer while other lambs and locks and crutchings were unchanged. Of the 25,157 bales offered, 7.9 percent was passed in. WI said Japan and China were the principal buyers with support from Western Europe and most sectors of the trade. After over a week of conflicting price influences, the Bradford market finally decided to settle lower, they said. Both 70s and 66s Super experienced the full fourteen pence fall while 64s Super and Blended dropped eight and six pence respectively. "But the blends involving wool from non-Australian sources haven't fallen as much," one source said. "The way crossbreds have held and even improved their values reflect the dearer UK wool market and New Zealand prices for coarser crossbreds," he added. English wool tops were quoted up three to four pence to trade at between 261 to 275 pence per kg. But several sources grew increasingly pessmistic about the chance of even a modest recovery in local prices. The big discounts offered on finest Supers failed to attract fresh trade although some buying interest was noted. "A decline to new lows looks increasingly probable and at the very least, a significantly firmer trend is unlikely for some weeks," one market specialist said. 061030 MET feb 97
