Merino fleece was dearer, with 19/20/25 micron up to 1.5 percent dearer, 21/23m one percent dearer, 22m 0.5 percent dearer and 24m two percent dearer. Merino skirtings were generally unchanged, WI said. In crossbreds, 26m was up to one percent dearer, 27/29/30/31 0.5 percent dearer and 28m unchanged. In cardings, lambs were fully firm, locks slightly dearer and crutchings unchanged, it said. WI said Japan, Western Europe and China were the principal buyers with support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 22,665 bales on offer, 5.5 percent was passed in. With its main pricing influence taking a back seat, the tops market was waiting for raw wool auctions later in the week to offer fresh direction, they said. Producers said the lack of new business available was beginning to take its toll as orders were being outpaced by deliveries. The near-term outlook was clouded further by the strength of sterling which sellers in both the domestic and export markets said had progressively reduced their competitiveness. 120953 MET feb 97
