A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON WEDNESDAY

Autor:
ZAGREB, Nov 2 (Hina) - The Zagreb-based daily VJESNIK carries reports on the marking of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day in Croatian cemeteries, stressing that this year candles could not be lit and wreaths were not laid in all cemeteries of Croatia because safe visits to loved ones' graves were not guaranteed to all Croatian citizens. As regards this problem a VJESNIK journalist, T. Grgovski, writes an article titled "Inhumane Game With Displaced People's Feelings" and says UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) and Serb rebels as usual played around with an idea that Croat displaced people would be allowed to visit cemeteries in the occupied areas on these great Christian holidays. But, it was surprising that Croatian senior officials joined the play, the journalist writes. Croatian Parliament's House of Counties Deputy Speaker, Damir Zoric, (Croatian Social-Liberal Party, or HSLS), gives an interview with the daily after returning from the journey through Bosnia and says that Croatia's policies on Bosnia and Croatian policies in Bosnia must be grounded on a single and integral strategy aimed at survival of the Bosnian Croats in that country. Commenting on his recent promotion to cardinal Msgr. Vinko Puljic, the Sarajevo Archbishop, is quoted by VJESNIK as saying that Croatian people can be happy to have its two cardinals in two states (both in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina). He adds that his place is now to be the Sarajevo Archdiocese until the Holy Father makes another decision. The Zagreb-based daily VECERNJI LIST also carries reports on marking All Saints' Day throughout Croatia. Commenting on prospects of forthcoming Croatian-Serbian talks a VECERNJI LIST correspondent, N. Ivnakovic, says Croatia has to negotiate with Belgrade because of the current situation, but it is to negotiate under conditions which will not strengthen political diplomatic or military positions of the Belgrade regime and its international supporters. Cardinal Vinko Puljic is also quoted by the daily as saying that there are people both in Croatian and Bosniac sides who impede establishing the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, but he adds it is not up him to name such persons.
