BOSNIAN SERBS AND MOSLEMS RENEW FIGHTING SOUTHWEST OF SARAJEVO

SARAJEVO, Oct 3 (Hina) - Bosnian Serb and Moslem-led government forces renewed battles on Mounts Igman and Bjelasnica, southwest of Sarajevo, over the weekend. UNPROFOR spokesman Tim Spicer told reporters in Sarajevo today that the fighting had been incited by the Bosnian government army Saturday morning when its troops mounted a combined infantry and mortar attack on the village of Rakitnica on the edge of the demilitarized zone supervised by French UN peace-keepers. The Serbs responded with fierce artillery fire, killing 13 Moslem soldiers in a counter-attack, the spokesman said. On Sunday, French 'blue helmets' sighted two units of Bosnian army troops in an attempt to re-enter the demilitarized zone. They were also sighted by the Serbs, who shelled Moslem positions all afternoon. The UNPROFOR commander for Sarajevo, Gen. Herve Gobilliard, strongly protested to the Bosnian army over these incidents, demanding that they stop attacks in the Igman and Bjelasnica demilitarized areas. Moslem-Croat federation vice-president Ejup Ganic yesterday promised to Gobilliard that Bosnian army forces would pull out. About 300 Moslem troops are expected to withdraw from the area today. Spicer said the Bosnian army action was most likely aimed at securing control of a major road in the region. UN sources in Sarajevo confirmed that Serb and Moslem forces also continued fighting in western Bosnia yesterday. Serb forces fired 78 mortar rounds on the Konjic area, 50 km south of Sarajevo, with two projectiles also hitting the town's centre.
