PRAGUE, March 31 (Hina) - Croatian ambassador before the
Organisation for Security and Co-operation (OSCE), Darko Bekic
yesterday informed OSCE high officials in Prague of fresh military
incursions in Croatia in Sector East.
He said that Croatia wanted a more active role on the part of
the OSCE in stopping conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.
"By launching a fresh military incursion into Croatian
territories, the Belgrade authorities - contrary to all their
statements and professed policies of non-interference - have, in
fact, put into motion a military-strategic plan, undoubtedly aimed
at nothing less than the annexation of these territories," Bekic
warned.
"Mr Chairman, my Government strongly believes that a more
active role on the part of the OSCE in the peace efforts is a
necessary prerequisite for any substantial role by the OSCE in the
post-conflict, rehabilitation period," he said.
The Croatian Government was looking particularly to the
possibilities for broadening the role and mandate of the EU/OSCE
Sanctions Assistance Mission in Croatia. Bekic said the Croatian
Government believed that the existig SAM Croatia, within a new
mandate of the UN Peace Forces in Croatia - with an increased
membership - could play a much more useful and important role, if
it joins the UN forces teams deployed on the specific border
crossings of Croatia in controlling - through monitoring and
reporting - the internationally recognised borders of Croatia.
