GENEVA, Jan 27 (Hina) - A five-day international panel on the
protection of war victims ended today in Geneva.
The Croatian delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan
Simonovic and Budislav Vukas.
The participants agreed that despite a plethora of
conventions, protocols and instruments, the international
humanitarian law was being violated in various parts of the world.
It was therefore necessary to improve the existing legal and
institutional mechanisms for the protection of war victims.
The panel adopted a Statement recommending nine measures for
improving the education on humanitarian law, investigation of
humanitarian law abuses etc.
These recommendations will serve as a basis for the
International Confeence of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Organisations, to be held in Geneva in December.
