"We are satisfied with the attention the Croatian Government
is paying to us. But it has small resources available, while the
reconstruction of Dubrovnik costs much," the Dubrovnik mayor,
Nikola Obuljen told foreign reporters who are visiting Croatia at
an initiative of the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP).
War damage caused to Dubrovnik during the Serbian-Montenegrin
aggression against the country totals US$ 2.6 billion, according to
Obuljen.
Foreign journalists have already visited the Adriatic town of
Sibenik where the UNDP has began a pilot programme for assessment
of assistance needed for the reconstruction of central Dalmatia.
After the assessment, the UNDP will start collecting means from
governments and non-governmental organizations for the help to
Croatia. According to rough estimates, means needed for the
reconstruction of Sibenik would come between 40 and 80 million
dollars.
On Monday the journalists will visit the town of Ston, damaged
by recent earthquakes. The UNDP is sending US$ 70,000-worth help to
the town. The help contains food, electric heaters, and tarpaulins
for houses roofs of which have been damaged.
