MOSTAR, 30 Dec (Hina) - The greatest progress in the implementation
of the Dayton peace agreement in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1997 was
made in Mostar and southern Bosnia-Herzegovina, international
representatives told a press conference in Mostar Tuesday.
Compared to 1996, there was no fear and no cases of intimidation,
shooting, explosions or expulsion in 1997, said Martin Garrod, head
of the regional office of the High Representative in Mostar.
That, in Garrod's opinion, was the result of apprehension of
criminals in February and March 1997.
Progress in the establishment of joint Bosniak-Croat police and the
successful completion of elections for the joint City Council and
six Mostar municipalities were also positive events, Garrod said.
The return of a large number of displaced people and refugees to the
local Canton and the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina would be the
focus of attention next year, Garrod said, adding this was of key
importance for the future of the country.
