VUKOVAR, Nov 25 (Hina) - The French Ambassador to Croatia, Jean
Jacques Gaillarde said in Vukovar on Tuesday that the peaceful
reintegration of the Croatian Danube river region was a successful
process which, if it ended successfully, would pose an example to
all the peoples in the former Yugoslavia as to how to peacefully
resolve conflicts.
After a closed-door meeting with Mayor Vladimir Stengl, Gaillarde
told reporters he was very satisfied with the measures undertaken
so far so the residents of the UN-administered Danubian area could
live in dignity.
Asked about France's financial help in the reconstruction of the
Danube region, Gaillarde recalled that France was participating in
European Union plans for the reconstruction of the area, adding
that France would also help on its own in the future.
Stengl said that France had donated about DM 1.5 million to the
reconstruction of the Vukovar water supply system.
During his visit to Croatia's eastern UNTAES-conrolled region,
Gaillarde is to hold talks with the director of the Croatian
Reconstruction and Development of the Danubian Area Centre, Ivan
Krstanovic, Vojislav Stanimirovic, MP, deputy chairman of the
Croatian government Trust Establishment Committee and president of
the Serb Democratic Independent Party (SDSS), as well as with
UNTAES representatives.
