The head of the Commission, Ivan Mrkonjic, said that
deadlines for the registration of candidates for the House of
Counties would last until 1 March, while the deadline for the
registration of candidates for local elections expires on 28
February.
Parties are obliged to submit their candidates lists by
28 February, that is, 26 February, as it will take two days to
check the validity of the lists.
Once the registration of candidates is over, pre-election
campaigns will start and they will last until the elections,
when a ban on electioneering will start. The ban is to last
until the closing of polling stations.
Preliminary election results will be known on 15 April,
Mrkonjic said.
The Election Commission yesterday called on all political
parties which are to participate in the elections, to send the
names of their representatives who are to follow the
Commission's activities.
The majority party has the right to one representative
and Opposition parties have the right to one representative as
well. So far, neither the majority party nor the Opposition
parties have sent their proposals, Mrkonjic said.
Members of the Election Commission will meet
representatives of the U.N. Transitional Administration in
Eastern Slavonia (UNTAES) on Saturday and discuss with them
the organization of elections in the area.
The deputy head of the Election Commission, Jakob
Miletic, told reporters that all county election commissions
have been appointed so far. Citizens will be able to vote at
6,000 to 7,000 polling stations on 13 April, Miletic said.
Activities of election committees have been streamlined
so that the same election committees would implement the
elections for representatives to the House of Counties and
representatives to the local bodies of authority.
It would be useful for all parties to use their right to
supervise the election on 13 April, Miletic said.
