WASHINGTON, June 24 (Hina) - U.S. media as well as Washington have
welcomed a decision of the Yugoslav government to strike up
cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
The government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) on
Saturday passed a decree on cooperation with the Hague-based ICTY,
which comes into force on Sunday. The decree provides for the
extradition of Yugoslav citizens accused of war crimes to the
ICTY.
Reacting upon this information, an official of the White House, who
spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed satisfaction with
Belgrade's decision.
We regard it as a positive step but we are going to follow what will
ensue, he said.
American media particularly underlined an announcement of a
Yugoslav deputy prime minister, Miroljub Labus, who said that a
former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, labelled as the
Balkan butcher for his role in wars in the area, might be extradited
to the Tribunal within weeks.
So far, the ICTY has filed 16 unsealed indictments against Yugoslav
citizens.
The State Department has not yet responded to the information about
this by-law, and has not yet decided whether the US will participate
in a donors' conference for Yugoslavia, set for 29 June in Brussels.
US diplomats have to date reiterated that Washington makes its
participation conditional on Milosevic's extradition.
