ZAGREB, April 6 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday continued its session with a discussion on a final bill on the election of members to representation bodies of units of local and regional self-government which, for the
upcoming local elections in May, proposes a proportional and not, as it was the case so far, joint electoral model. According to the new law, only persons with residence in units of local and regional self-government in which they are running for office, can put up their candidacy, Croatian Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic said. ZAGREB, April 6 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday
continued its session with a discussion on a final bill on the
election of members to representation bodies of units of local and
regional self-government which, for the upcoming local elections
in May, proposes a proportional and not, as it was the case so far,
joint electoral model.
According to the new law, only persons with residence in units of
local and regional self-government in which they are running for
office, can put up their candidacy, Croatian Justice Minister
Stjepan Ivanisevic said.
Ivanisevic added that a separate law would regulate the issue of the
representation of national minorities in units of local and
regional self-government, considering there are still no official
results from the census, which would show the share of national
minorities in the overall population of a unit.
The parliamentary bench of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and
the Liberal Party (LS) motioned an immediate election of municipal
heads, mayors and prefects. The HNS/LS parliamentary bench said
should the parliament fail to adopt their amendments, the bench
would not support the new law. Representative of the Croatian
Democratic Union and the Democratic Centre share the same
standpoint.
