Mesic said that the construction of a highway that would link
Dubrovnik to Split and Zagreb would help the whole county come out of
isolation in terms of traffic links, which would result in strong
development according to European standards.
Asked by reporters to comment on the case of former foreign minister
Mate Granic and Koncar CEO Darinko Bago, Mesic said: "I am not in the
habit of meddling in the work of the judiciary."
Responding to the question of Slovene soldiers stationed on Mount
Sveta Gera, Mesic said every time he met his Slovene counterpart Janez
Drnovsek they discussed outstanding issues between the two countries.
"I believe we will resolve all those issues in the period ahead of us,
including the issue of Sveta Gera. Slovene soldiers came there as the
Yugoslav army withdrew. Now that Slovenia is in the European Union and
Croatia is at its door, there is no reason for soldiers of either
country to be deployed along the border, including Slovene soldiers
stationed in the part of Croatian territory.
"We must resolve that issue in such a way as to ensure that the
transmitter positioned on Sveta Gera, which is owned by Slovenia, is
guarded by Croatian police or some security organisation. But in any
case it should not be soldiers," Mesic said.
