Representatives of the Jewish community and authorities of the city
authorities attended the traditional commemoration and laid wreaths i
in tribute to Holocaust victims.
Six candles were traditionally lit for six million killed Jews.
Wreaths were also laid by Croatia President's envoy Igor Dekanic,
parliament vice president Luka Bebic, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka
Kosor, Zagreb Mayor Vlasta Pavic and the president of the Alliance of
Croatian Anti-Fascist Fighters, Ivan Fumic.
In 1951, the Israeli parliament (Knesset) passed a law on proclaiming
the 27th day of Nissan as Yom Hashoa, the Holocaust and Martyrs
Memorial Day when commemorations should be served in memory of victims
of the Holocaust. The date was chosen in tribute to the start of the
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in spring 1943.
