The parliament ended its session with a debate on this issue.
Earlier in the day MPs discussed a proposal by the opposition Croatian
People's Party (HNS) on the direct election of mayors of
municipalities and cities and of county prefects. The proposal was
supported in principle but most MPs said this solution could bring
into question the stability of local self-government units.
On Friday, the Sabor will consider a report by Ombudsman Ante Klaric
for 2003.
