once or more times offered bribes, accoridng to results of an opinion poll which the Institution for Market Survey (GfK) carried out at the end of 2003 and the start of 2004.

ZAGREB, April 18 (Hina) - A majority of people in 14 countries in
central and eastern Europe do not think that bribery and corruption
are normal occurrences in society, but over a third of respondents
have admitted that they at least once or more times offered bribes,
accoridng to results of an opinion poll which the Institution for
Market Survey (GfK) carried out at the end of 2003 and the start of
2004.#L#
The opinion poll was conducted in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the
Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro and Ukraine.
According to the Corruption Perception Index, a level of corruption in
the covered areas ranges from moderate to very high. Austria is the
least-infested with corruption, while the corruption was most widely
spread in Serbia-Montenegro
In each of the 14 countries, 1,000 citizens were covered by the
survey. Most Croatian, Slovene, Austrian, Polish and Bulgarian
respondents said they rejected bribes. On the other hand, Lithuanians,
Romanians and Ukrainians showed a positive attitude towards bribery,
according to the results of the poll, which were presented in Zagreb
last Wednesday.
Twenty two percent of all respondents believe that bribery and
corruption reign to the greatest extent in the health sector.
