LISBON, April 5 (Hina) - The visit to Portugal was entirely successful, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic told reporters on Monday at the end of the first Croatian visit visit to Portugal at the highest level.

Mesic said his visit aimed at confirming friendship with Portugal, and
within that seeking Portugal's support for joining the EU, and
advancing economic cooperation.
Earlier today, Mesic held talks with his Portuguese counterpart Jorge
Sampai. After the talks, Sampai said Portugal had been supporting
Croatia's candidacy for EU membership since day one. Mesic said
Croatia met all conditions for membership of Euro-Atlantic
organisations. He said Croatia cooperation with the UN war crimes
tribunal at The Hague and that all of its citizens, witnesses,
suspects and indictees answered the invitation to The Hague except for
one persons and stressed that Croatia should not be punished for
that.
Mesic, who also met Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barros
and parliament head Joao Bosco Soareso Moto Amarao, ended the official
part of his wisit with a meeting with representatives of the
association of Portugal's industrial workers.
The Croatia-Portugal trade in the first nine months of 2003 amounted
to US18.91 million.
