ZAGREB, March 27 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic met US Ambassador to Croatia Ralph Frank on Saturday to discuss the situation in the Middle East and the wider region, as well as Croatia's efforts to intensify economic
cooperation with countries in the region, the President's Office said in a statement.

In the discussion about the situation in the Middle East and the
region, including neighbouring Arab countries, there was a high level
of agreement about the need and models of creating conditions for the
permanent stabilisation of that part of the world, especially
conditions for a more intensive economic cooperation, the statement
said.
In that regard, President Mesic's recent initiatives are welcomed by
the USA, which understands their potential benefits for Croatia's
economy. This was especially stressed in a letter by US Secretary of
Defence Donald Rumsfeld which Ambassador Frank handed President Mesic,
the statement said.
President Mesic expressed satisfaction and belief that the Croatian
government and business people would use offered possibilities of
stronger investment and business with that part of the world.
President Mesic and Ambassador Frank also agreed that the cooperation
between Croatia and the USA was constantly improving.
Last week Mesic toured Arab countries, including Qatar, Syria and
Jordan, to discuss economic cooperation.
