In a letter to Kosovo's political leaders, Solana urged them to be
responsible, immediately stop the violence and bring the culprits to
justice. He also urged them to cooperate with the local U.N. Mission
and the Kosovo Force with a view to restoring order and security in
Kosovo immediately.
There will be no progress in Kosovo as long as violence continues and
perpetrators go unpunished, the letter said, adding that the latest
developments were a big step backwards and raised doubts as to the
prospects of Kosovo having a multiethnic and peaceful future.
Solana vehemently condemned all violent actions against Kosovo
citizens or representatives of the international community who are
helping with the establishment of stability and progress in Kosovo.
Solana will be in touch with the local U.N. civil administrator, Harri
Holkeri, around the clock, and discuss the Kosovo issue with U.N.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday.
