NEW YORK, Sept 19 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic supported in New York on Monday the establishment of a Human Rights Council and a Democratic Fund at the United Nations, pledging Croatia's active support for their efforts to strengthen human rights and democracy worldwide.

Speaking at a ministerial meeting of the Community of Democracies, held alongside the 60th session of the UN General Assembly, Grabar-Kitarovic said Croatia had already donated money to the Democratic Fund.

She said the Democratic Fund's role in the United Nations should be bolstered because governments which wanted to establish and strengthen democracy in their countries deserved assistance.

The Community of Democracies was established in Warsaw in 2000 at the initiative of the United Nations and another nine countries for the purpose of promoting global democracy. Croatia is one of the movement's 125 member countries.

On Monday, the women foreign ministers attending the UN General Assembly meeting, Grabar-Kitarovic included, sent a letter to Secretary General Kofi Annan seeking that women be given proportionate representation in the newly-established UN Peacebuilding Commission.

At a dinner organised by Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds for women foreign ministers on Sunday, Grabar-Kitarovic offered Croatia's active participation in the work of the commission expected to help countries in post-conflict reconstruction.

On Monday, the Croatian minister attended a lunch for ministers from Central European Initiative (CEI) countries organised by Slovak Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan. It was said that Croatia's EU accession negotiations were expected to start soon.

The ministers agreed in principle on a meeting of CEI prime and economy ministers, and discussed the strengthening of good neighbourly relations in Central and East Europe.
