NEW YORK, Sept 16 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has expressed moderate satisfaction with results of the ongoing UN summit in New York.

"We expected a leap, a high leap, but we have seen a step forward and this is also a success," Mesic said in New York on Friday afternoon.

Mesic told Croatian reporters that a resolution which over 160 heads of state or government, who convened for the summit of the United Nations, should sign was a compromise only possible to be reached by consensus between developed states and and developing ones. The document is intended for encouraging a global action against poverty and for a significant reform of the world organisation.

The Croatian head of state will later in the day sign an international convention on prevention of nuclear terrorism.

Earlier on Friday, Mesic held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the margins of the summit.

Mesic and Ahmadinejad discussed the issue of the Iranian nuclear programme which western countries have pointed out as a problem as they fear that it could be used for military purposes.

According to Mesic, the Iranian president told him that Iran was preparing itself for ensuring some other sources of energy after oil resources be depleted.

The two presidents agreed that Iran and Croatia should strengthen their economic ties, and Mesic invited Ahmadinejad to visit Zagreb.

Also on Friday, Mesic met Jordanian King Abdullah for talks on promoting bilateral cooperation. The Jordanian king, who launched an initiative to gather countries with the income per capita between 1.5 and 3.5 thousand dollars, expressed his wish that Croatia and Poland join the initiative, although income per capita in these two countries is much higher. According to sources in the Croatian delegation, Mesic accepted the initiative.

On Thursday evening, the Croatian President attended the inaugural conference of a global initiative launched by former US President Bill Clinton. This initiative is to engage current and former statesmen, business people, outstanding scientists and nongovernmental organisations' representatives in plans about finding quick solutions to problems of poverty, climate changes and conflicts.

Mesic said that on that occasion he had briefly met with Clinton who told him that he was planning to visit south-eastern Europe.
